Kim Appleton is the Equal Employment Manager for Defense Contract
Management Agency Aeronautical and Naval Sea Systems Divisions. She
is the principal advisor and assistant to the Director on the development,
execution and evaluation of the district Equal Employment Opportunity
program. Her office serves over five thousand employees in 40+ field
offices. Her office is responsible for all facets of equal employment
opportunity, including: affirmative employment program, discrimination
complaint management, special emphasis programs, and reasonable accommodation.
She has been in this position since 1994. During her twelve-year
tenure with the agency, Ms. Appleton has received numerous exceptional
performance awards and the Exceptional Civilian Service Award.
Ms. Appleton has served as a recruiter for the Workforce Recruitment
Program (WRP) for three years. During that time, she has interviewed
over one hundred college students with disabilities. Additionally,
her office has hired several WRP students – one is now a full
time employee.
Ms. Appleton started her federal career in 1978 as a sheet metal
worker apprentice at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, in Kittery, Maine.
After completing her apprenticeship, she served as a work leader,
apprentice instructor, and production controller. While working in
the trades, she participated in career days and workshops to interest
girls and women in non-traditional jobs. She also served as an EEO
Counselor and was active in EEO program events. In 1991, Ms. Appleton
was promoted to the position of Deputy Equal Employment Opportunity
Officer (DEEO) for the shipyard, serving as the principal advisor
to the Shipyard Commander on EEO matters. During her tenure as DEEO,
she was active in community outreach for disability and civil rights
issues. In addition, she provided training for employees affected
by down-sizing through the Shipyard Outplacement Office.
Ms. Appleton graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of Southern
Maine. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial
Technology. The School of Applied Science recognized her as the
Outstanding Student in Industrial Technology in 1996. In addition,
she was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society for her academic
achievement.
Ms. Appleton lives in Hampton, New Hampshire with her husband Glenn.
She has two grown children, Matthew and Ashley.
