High Tech Demonstration Room
The High Tech Demonstration Room provides participants with the opportunity
for hands-on experience with leading edge hardware and software.
The
Assistive Technology Center (ATEC) at Spaulding
Rehabilitation Hospital is hosting the 2006 High Tech Demonstration
Room. ATEC offers comprehensive technological services for individuals
with a broad
range of disabilities.
In
some cases,
technologies help a person who is learning to live with a new disability.
In other instances, staff members identify new technologies to help
people with chronic or progressive disabling conditions.
Demonstrations will include a variety of AT to address areas such
as:
- home / work automation / EADLs (electronic aids to daily living
): light, TV, DVD, A/C, fan, etc remote controls and whole systems
- ergonomics: split keyboards, voice recognition, and foot mice
- alternative computer access: head controlled mice,
voice recognition, different mouse and keyboard options, onscreen
keyboards,
and software
- augmentative and alternative communication devices:
computer based and stand alone units, PDAs, and low tech AAC books
- assistive software / hardware: graphic organizers,
PDAs, and text to speech software
The room will be staffed by Kathryn Zainea, MS, CCC-SLP, ATP;
Peggy Dellea, MS, OT/L;
Jen Buxton, MA, OTR/L, ATP.
The
ATEC team consists of professionals from the following fields: Physiatry,
Occupational Therapy,
Physical Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, and Neuropsychology.
The multidisciplinary team evaluates each client's strengths and limitations.
Team members then pool their knowledge to recommend commercial
or custom-made devices
that meet the individual's total needs. Since many health insurance
plans will
only cover basic technologies required for medical reasons, the
team also helps
clients to identify sources of funding.
Services provided by the
ATEC team
include: augmentative/alternative communication, alternative
computer access,
manual and powered mobility, environmental controls, custom
seating and
positioning, ergonomic adaptations, activities of daily/living,
personal care
devices, modifications for visual impairments, assisted memory
and training and
follow-up.
The High Tech Demonstration Room is open during Exhibit hours.
